Where in Time

About

Travel through 5,000 years.

Where in Time drops you inside a real moment in history — a Roman road, the deck of a Spanish caravel, the lunar surface — and asks two questions: where are you? and when? Five rounds. One score. Beat your best.

This is a private beta — feedback welcome.

How it works

  1. Look around

Drag, swipe, or use arrow keys to spin the 360° panorama. Study the architecture, the sky, the people.

  2. Drop a pin

Click the world map to mark where you think you stand. Hover to expand it for accuracy.

  3. Pick a year

Slide or type. Press B for BC, Enter to submit. Closer in space and time = more points.

How scoring works

Each round is worth 10,000 points — 5,000 for geography, 5,000 for chronology. Both fall off exponentially the further your guess strays from the truth, but the curve adapts to each scene: a 200-year miss on the moon landing is a disaster, the same miss on Sumerian agriculture is excellent — and pinning Hammurabi within 1,000 km is great, the same miss on the Eiffel Tower is not. Curves widen for older eras and harder scenes.

Year tolerance by era

5,000 × e−|Δyr| / σ

  • Modern (1901+) σ ≈ 25 yr
  • Renaissance (1501–1900) σ ≈ 75 yr
  • Medieval (501–1500) σ ≈ 200 yr
  • Ancient (≤500) σ ≈ 500 yr

Every game: 2 / 2 / 1

2 easy · 2 medium · 1 hard

  • Easy tight curve, must nail it
  • Medium standard tolerance
  • Hard wide curve, rough knowledge rewarded

Some scenes carry an uncertainty band — the real-world ground truth is itself fuzzy ("circa 2530 BCE ±500 years"). Guess inside the band, get full credit; outside it, the curve takes over. Casual mode is for practice and personal-best chasing. Daily Challenge puts everyone on the same 5 scenes for true head-to-head — leaderboards reset every UTC midnight.

Leaderboards. Submitting any score requires picking a pseudonym (1–20 chars). Your alias is locked to your device for 30 days so nobody can impersonate you. To carry your alias and standings across devices — phone, laptop, work computer — sign in from the title screen with Google, Apple, X, Facebook, or email. Signed-in players earn a verified mark next to their alias on every leaderboard.
